Short answer: Compare per-unit prices against a published list, check what each service includes (drain flushing, gas check, transport), insist on a leak check before any gas top-up, make sure installation wiring is done by a licensed electrical worker, and get the price in writing before the technician starts.
Five checks
- Per-unit price against a published list. Helpling publishes general servicing at S$50 for 2 wall-mounted units and a chemical wash at S$80 to S$100 a unit (Helpling). A quote far above needs explaining; one far below may leave things out.
- What is included. Drain flushing, a gas check, condenser cleaning, transport.
- A leak check before gas. Refrigerant is not used up, so low gas almost always means a leak (Helpling). A company that tops up every few months without looking for the leak is selling you the same gas again.
- Licensed electrical work for installations: wiring work must be done by an EMA-licensed electrical worker (MTI, 2022).
- The price in writing before work starts, and a receipt after.
Red flags
- An upsell to an overhaul without showing you the coil.
- Repeated gas top-ups with no leak found.
- No written price, or a total that changes once the work is done.

An aircon company will call you on the number you gave. If water is dripping near a socket, switch that aircon off until it is checked.
More questions
Is the cheapest company the best?
Only if it includes the same work. A very low general servicing price that skips the drain line is not a bargain if the unit leaks a month later.
Should I sign a servicing contract?
If you service regularly, a plan usually lowers the per-unit price. Check the minimum units and what each visit covers.
